Office Vacancies and the Role of Space Utilization:
Tango Study on Occupancy Analytics
Hybrid work has made occupancy analytics
more crucial than ever. Companies need to
monitor how space is used to ensure
employees can access the types of space
they need and that the organization uses
resources efficiently with vacancies on the
rise.
While badge scans and manual
walkthroughs were generally considered
"good enough" before the COVID-19
pandemic, these methods often don't
provide the constant visibility they need to
make informed decisions. But despite the
cost savings space optimization can yield,
the barrier to more sophisticated
occupancy analytics has always been cost.
Installing and maintaining space utilization
sensors is expensive. And companies are
keen to find the most cost-effective ways
to optimize their hybrid workplaces. (Or
meet the increased demand from RTO.)
Technology that tracks real-time
occupancy—especially network-based
tracking like Tango Occupancy—offers a
smarter, more cost-effective solution.
Unlike sensors, it doesn't require new
hardware, and it provides granular, reliable
data on how long people stay, which
spaces they use, and how usage trends
shift by team or schedule.
In Tango's 2024 study, 48% of
companies said cost was the biggest
barrier to occupancy tracking, and only
4% had adopted sensorless, network-
based systems like Tango Occupancy.
Yet, these systems offer deeper
insights at a fraction of the cost
without the need for specialized
hardware or ongoing maintenance.
Effective hybrid work begins with
knowing what's happening inside your
space. Without that, even the best
policies can fall short.
