UPGRADE
Who's the Customer?
The products that make up your cobbled together "solution"
also have independent lifecycles and roadmaps, which could
potentially wreak havoc on each other. Also, the vendors will
be serving more than one master. They each have a distinct
customer base that is demanding certain product upgrades and
enhancements, and then the three of them also have a small
subset of joint customers demanding something else. Since the
distinct customer base is larger and will scream louder, product
development will focus on their needs before those of their
smaller customers.
Who's on First?
With each product having its own roadmap, what happens
when one does an upgrade independent of the other two? In
all likelihood, things will break as schemes change, new code is
developed and platforms morph. So who's responsible for the full
end-to-end Quality Assurance cycle and regression testing? Our
guess is that there will be a lot of finger pointing.
