Floor Plan 2.0: Discovering Your Future Office 7 Still, now that COVID has opened the floodgates to remote work, it's possible that new employee behaviors will emerge. If you assign days to come in for collaboration, a percentage of employees may stay home anyway, knowing that they can still be productive and collaborate remotely. How will you respond to these emerging patterns? Will you modify your space or try to work harder to drive your desired behaviors? Maybe your in-person wellness checks create too much congestion in the lobby, and you need to start assigning windows to come into work, or designate multiple locations for these check-ins. Or suppose nobody reserves your virtual collaboration rooms because they can just use Zoom f rom their workstations. The low demand for these spaces could f ree you to use it to address different needs—which may only emerge during the return. If you find that you're going through hand sanitizer, disposable equipment, or other sanitation-related supplies too slowly, that could be an indicator that you need to relocate these stations to higher-traffic areas or increase signage to ensure employees work to maintain a healthy workplace. As you identify underutilized spaces and resources, you'll need to pivot f rom your original plans and adapt to post- COVID trends by either reallocating that space or reducing your costs. Remember that this is all data you didn't have when you first planned the return to work, so it shouldn't be surprising if you have to make significant adjustments to your office layout.
