Hydraulic fracturing Hydraulic fracturing, also known as fracking, is a process that involves the fracture of bedrock formations by pumping a fluid at high pressure into a well. The fractures in the bedrock are held open by the proppant to extract oil or gas. It requires rigorous safety regulations to prevent poisoning groundwater, polluting surface water, impairing wildlife, and threatening ecosystems. It encourages consumers to purchase energy-efficient equipment or to participate in programs meant to reduce their energy usage. Some examples of the incentives given are rebates, access to zero or low-interest loans, or direct installation of low-cost equipment.
