Start by determining the company's main issues of material importance to stakeholders and only report on the issues that are directly relevant to a sustainability strategy. Mainly consider the sustainability-related risks and opportunities that affect the business. Engage with stakeholders and know your reporting audience, including investors, employees, customers, and regulators, to understand their expectations and concerns. Conduct a Materiality Assessment Phase 1 Phase 2 Phase 3 Gather resources from reporting organizations directly or outsource consultants in deciding on a reporting framework. Select the appropriate framework(s) based on your business needs and stakeholder expectations. Outline the KPIs and benchmarks you will need to use based on frameworks and the materiality assessment. Understand what you may be missing by clarifying the reporting requirements, priorities, and timelines. Identify and assess reporting gaps, compared with proposed regulations. Choosing a Framework: Setting goals and targets is an important part of reporting, allowing firms to measure and communicate progress to suppliers and key stakeholders, ensuring transparency throughout the entire process. Identifying baseline emissions and emission hotspots, as well as the initial status of other sustainability metrics is the first step before determining the quantifiable targets of what you want to achieve. Consider using validated targets by the Science Based Targets Initiative to up the quality of your reports. Science- based targets define an evidence-backed pathway for companies to reduce greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions aligned with limiting global warming to 1.5°C above pre-industrial levels. Setting Targets and Goals: This includes setting clear objectives, timelines, and responsibilities within your organization for governance and data collection/ management. Establish board oversight and top-down accountability mechanisms to support a robust control environment.
