IMPLEMENTING
SUSTAINABILITY
There are many ways to reduce greenhouse gas emissions from the
commercial real estate sector. Across real estate portfolios, firms can
start implementing energy efficiency projects, reducing water use,
utilizing combined heat and power and renewable energy, and
integrating the more efficient use and recycling of materials. While this
report mainly focuses on emissions mitigation and energy efficiency
efforts, environmental damages associated with waste, water use, and
habitat destruction are also important issues to track and address in
overall ESG measures. It is important to keep in mind that 'sustainable'
commercial real estate is about more than the idea of emissions
reductions, rather it is the holistic strategy of increasing the value of
buildings to stakeholders, future-proofing to avoid risks associated
with climate change and environmental regulation, and reducing
costs.
