ENERGY STAR: The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency, provides tools and resources to help businesses identify cost-effective approaches to managing energy use in their buildings and plants. Its online tool, ENERGY STAR Portfolio ManagerĀ®, is used to measure and track energy, water, and/or waste and materials for commercial properties. ENERGY STAR scores are an industry standard for rating a facility's energy performance. GRESB: GRESB helps real estate investors assess the ESG performance of commercial real estate portfolios around the globe. Real estate firms that report to GRESB receive a benchmark report and score that can help them engage with investors and understand how they rank relative to their peers. The Building Research Establishment Environmental Assessment Method (BREEAM): the world's leading sustainability assessment method for master planning projects, infrastructure, and buildings. It recognizes and reflects the value in higher performing assets across the built environment lifecycle, from new construction to in-use and refurbishment. LEED (Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design): from the U.S. Green Building Council, is the most widely used green building rating system in the world. It provides a framework for healthy, highly efficient, and cost-saving green buildings. LEED certification is a globally recognized symbol of sustainability achievement and leadership. Benchmarking & Reporting: Performance data is typically benchmarked using a scoring or rating system such as Energy Performance Certificate (EPC) ratings or ENERGY STAR Portfolio Manager, which allows a building owner to compare a property's energy performance against itself over time as well as against similar buildings. Increasingly, benchmarking data collected on energy and water usage is being disclosed publicly on open data portals. Investors are also increasingly using ESG reporting frameworks like GRESB (formerly the Global Real Estate Sustainability Benchmark), CDP, TCFD, and science-based targets to inform their decisions. Green Building Certifications: Green building certification programs are voluntary programs that evaluate buildings based on their environmental performance and provide certification to those that meet certain standards. In addition to attracting tenants and investors who are interested in sustainability, green building certifications can also provide access to financing and technical assistance for sustainable building projects.
