The Post-COVID Consumer: The Future of Brick and Mortar Stores
14
As consumers abandoned their loyalty to brands and sought
any product that would meet their needs, it created a
unique opportunity for retailers. With private label products,
they could exert greater control over the supply chain and
distribution channels. Consumers were more willing to buy
whatever was available, and stores with private label catalogs
were equipped to ensure that their products were available
more often.
While stores competed for the limited supply f rom top
brands, private label products flew off the shelves.
Are private labels going to become the top brands
consumers seek out at major retailers? Maybe. But probably
not. More importantly though, post-COVID consumers will
have greater trust in some retailers' ability to provide viable
alternatives to the brands they love. So when their preferred
brand is out of stock in the future, they'll be more willing to
select private label products instead.
