2024 Lease Buyer's Guide to Lease Administration & Accounting
hosted software, customers were required to
"upgrade" their system periodically (usually semi-
annually or annually). Upgrades are expensive and
disruptive to your business, usually take months to
install and can require costly technical resources to
migrate (or rebuild) previous customizations. Run fast
and far from these vendors.
Contemporary software providers who have a multi-
tenant cloud-based technical architecture follow a
much different deployment methodology, one that
is faster, more efficient, less expensive and more
frequent. SaaS providers release more new features
and do so frequently—from 4 to 20 times per year
versus 1 to 2 times per year for legacy single-tenant
solutions. With this approach, the concept of an
upgrade does not exist, as you're always automatically
on the latest version of the software. This approach
is less expensive, and the savings are passed on to
customers, resulting in a substantially lower TCO. The
lesson here is to look for multi-tenant cloud-based
solutions.
Finally, make sure not to get duped by companies that
say they are a software-as-a-service (SaaS) provider
but are not. Often they hide behind a subscription-
based pricing model, plus hosting the software, to try
and get lumped in with true multi-tenant cloud-based
software. These providers still live in the world that is
expensive to implement, upgrade and maintain—all of
which raises your TCO.
